Product Specification: Stainless Steel Shot
1. Product Overview
Stainless Steel Shot is a high-quality, non-ferrous metallic abrasive designed for the surface treatment of non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and precision components. Unlike conventional cast steel shot, stainless steel shot offers superior corrosion resistance, ensuring that the workpiece remains rust-free and maintains its intrinsic metallic luster after blasting. It is widely used for cleaning, deburring, peening, and achieving a satin finish.
2. Key Characteristics
* Appearance: Bright, lustrous, spherical or cylindrical (cut wire).
* Materials: Primarily austenitic stainless steels, including grades 304, 316, 410, 430, and high-hardness martensitic stainless steel.
* Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation. Prevents "flash rust" on treated parts.
* Hardness: Moderate to high hardness (typically 240-600 HV / 20-55 HRC), providing a balance between cutting ability and longevity.
* Structure: Dense microstructure with low porosity, ensuring high durability and recyclability.
* Surface Finish: Produces a uniform, matte (satin) finish that highlights the natural color of the metal.
3. Manufacturing Process
We produce Stainless Steel Shot using two primary methods to suit different application needs:
* Cast Stainless Steel Shot:
* Raw stainless steel scrap is melted in an electric furnace.
* The molten metal is atomized using high-pressure water or air to form droplets.
* The droplets solidify into spherical shapes during free fall and are subsequently heat-treated and screened.
* Cut Wire Shot (Conditioned Cut Wire Shot):
* High-quality stainless steel wire is cut into short lengths.
* The cylindrical pieces undergo a "conditioning" (abrasive tumbling) process to remove sharp edges and form spherical or sub-spherical shapes.
* This method results in a very dense, high-strength abrasive with no internal defects.
4. Available Grades and Specifications
We offer a comprehensive range of grades to meet international standards (SAE, ISO, DIN):
* By Material Grade:
* 304 Stainless Shot: General purpose, good corrosion resistance, cost-effective.
* 316 Stainless Shot: Higher corrosion resistance due to Molybdenum content; ideal for marine environments and harsh chemical conditions.
* 400 Series (410, 430): Magnetic grades with higher hardness, suitable for specific peening applications.
* By Size (Diameter):
* Fine: 0.1mm - 0.3mm (for precision cleaning and polishing).
* Medium: 0.3mm - 1.0mm (for general deburring and descaling).
* Coarse: 1.0mm - 3.0mm (for heavy cleaning and shot peening).
* (Common designations: S0.3, S0.6, S1.0, S2.0, etc.)
* By Shape:
* SSP (Spherical): For polishing and peening.
* SSC (Cut Wire): For aggressive cleaning and roughening.
5. Primary Applications
Stainless Steel Shot is the preferred media for:
* Non-Ferrous Metal Cleaning:
* Aluminum, zinc, copper, and magnesium die-castings. It prevents the embedment issues often caused by cast steel shot.
* Stainless Steel Fabrication:
* Cleaning and descaling of stainless steel welds, pipes, and plates without introducing iron contamination.
* Precision Engineering:
* Deburring and edge radiusing of precision hardware tools, molds, and medical devices.
* Surface Peening:
* Improving the fatigue strength of springs, gears, and aircraft components.
* Decorative Finishing:
* Creating a uniform, non-directional matte finish on architectural hardware and consumer electronics.
6. Advantages
* Rust-Free Performance: Eliminates the need for post-blasting anti-rust treatment.
* High Brightness: Leaves the workpiece surface bright and clean.
* Long Life: High density and toughness result in a long service life and low consumption rates.
* Environmental: Non-toxic and chemically stable; reduces the need for acid pickling processes.
7. Packaging and Storage
* Packaging: 25kg kraft paper bags with moisture-proof liner, 1000kg Jumbo bags (FIBC), or steel drums.
* Storage: Store in a dry, indoor warehouse. Protect from rain and direct contact with the ground to prevent moisture absorption.
